Santa Claus myth
The Dutch pronounced the saint’s name as Sinterklaas, from which he became popular in America as Santa Claus. St Nicholas had inherited a fortune and he liked to spend it by helping the poor, anonymously of course.
The most famous of his tales of benevolence, is how he helped three sisters pay their dowries. Had they not got the money, they would have been sold as prostitutes. There are many other stories about his kindness and even and after his death people continued to honor him. He has been adopted, by many groups of people and countries to be their patron saint. The Santa Claus as we know him, today owes many of the traditions and practices to Saint Nicholas.
